(Close): US shares made gains on Wednesday despite signs of weakness in the US economy.

The US economy suffered its worst performance for five years in the first quarter of 2014.

The economy shrank at an annualised rate of 2.9% in the first three months of the year, the third estimate from the US Commerce Department showed.

CBS closed 6% higher after a judge ruled in favour of big broadcasters in a case over the Aereo TV service.

Aereo uses thousands of tiny antennas to pick-up TV signals and transmit them to subscribers who pay as little as $8 (£5) a month for the service.

But the court ruled that Aereo must pay broadcasters when it streams TV.

The Dow Jones rose 0.3% to 16,867 and the S&P 500 was 0.5% higher at 1,959.

"The trend for this market is still, for the time being, up," said Anastasia Amoroso, a global market strategist with JP Morgan Funds.

Monsanto closed 5% higher after the seed company announced plans for a $10bn share buyback programme.

Barnes & Noble closed 5.3% higher after it said it would split into two companies, one selling books and the other focused on its electronic book reader, the Nook.
