(Close): Major US stock markets closed lower for a second day on Tuesday as investors continued to take profit after last week's gains.

Continuing Monday's falls, the Dow fell 117.59 points, or 0.7%, at 16,906.62.

The S&P 500 closed down 13.94 points or 0.7% to 1,963.71, while the Nasdaq tumbled 60 points, or 1.35% to 4,391.46.

The falls come after the Dow and the S&P 500 both set record highs last week.

US drugs giant AbbVie was one of the biggest fallers, down nearly 3% to $55.69 after the company raised its offer to buy rival British drugs firm Shire. Shire has already rejected three offers from AbbVie.

After the close of the bell, Alcoa kicked off the US earnings season for the second quarter.

It reported a profit of $138m (£81m) which was better than analysts had expected. Shares rose in after-hours trading.
