(Close): US stocks reacted positively after the US Federal Reserve indicated that it will end its stimulus programme in October.

Initially shares dipped after minutes from the Fed's June meeting were released, but then recovered.

Airlines were among the best performers after American Airlines raised its sales forecast for the second quarter. Its shares closed 4.2% higher.

Jetblue closed 1.7% higher, Delta added 1.4% and Southwest was up 1.9%.

Aluminium maker Alcoa jumped 5.7% after it reported better-than-expected second quarter results.

The Dow Jones rose almost 0.5% to 16,985, the S&P 500 also closed almost 0.5% higher at 1,972 and the Nasdaq climbed 0.6% to 4,419.

"The market, after digesting the Fed minutes, came to the conclusion that the bond buying program ending in October is a sign of economic strength," said Peter Cardillo, chief market economist at Rockwell Global Capital in New York.

"So while it was a bit more hawkish, the conclusion is the economy doesn't need any more crutches."
