(Close): Leading stocks closed ahead to hit their fifteenth record-high close of the year on Wednesday.

They were boosted by news of a major Apple-IBM partnership and a rejected takeover bid by 21st Century Fox for Time Warner.

The Dow Jones index of leading blue chip shares was up by 77.52 points, or 0.45%, at 17138.20.

The S&P 500 rose by 0.42% to 1981.57. But the tech-based Nasdaq fell 0.33% to 4425.97.

Intel soared by 10% after it reported earnings ahead of expectations and announced $20bn in additional share repurchases.

Shares in Time Warner soared by 17%, to $83.13 per share, following its rejection of a takeover offer from Rupert Murdoch's 21st Century Fox.

Shares in IBM rose by 2% after it and Apple announced that they will work together on mobile apps to boost sales.

Bank of America was down after being hit by legal costs, ending the day 1.90% lower.
