(Close): US stocks slipped on Monday as investors remained cautious about instability in Ukraine and Gaza.

The S&P 500 fell as much as 0.6%, but clawed back some losses to close down 4.59 points, or 0.23%, at 1,973.6.

The Dow Jones fell 48.45 points, or 0.28%, to 17,051.7, while the Nasdaq ended down 7.44 points, or 0.17, at 4,424.7.

Energy services company Halliburton rose 0.1% despite reporting a 20% rise in second quarter earnings.

Toymaker Hasbro's stock closed 2.1% lower after its second quarter earnings failed to match analysts' expectations.

"The market is high and has been very strong," said Mace Blicksilver, director of Marblehead Asset Management. "But there are a lot of problems around too."
