(Close): It was a mixed day for the leading US indexes with the Dow closing lower but the S&P 500 and Nasdaq making gains.

Boeing depressed the Dow, falling 2.4% after the company reported slower than expected quarterly sales and rising costs at its military tanker project.

McDonald's fell 1% and Coca-Cola was down 0.6% following disappointing results released on Tuesday.

Overall the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.1%, to 17,086.

Apple surged 3.6% after reporting strong results on Tuesday.

It sold 35.2 million iPhones from March to June, an increase of 13% from the same time in 2013.

That helped the tech-heavy Nasdaq, which rose 0.4%, to 4,473.

Shares in Delta Airlines jumped 3.7% after reporting strong results and Southwest Airlines added 3%.

Delta helped boost the S&P 500 which 0.2% to close at 1,987.

Shares in snacks and drinks giant Pepsico rose 2.6% after the company released a positive set of results.

Pepsico raised its earnings forecast for the year and said sales had been boosted by the launch of new products.
