(Close): After opening higher, London's main index lost ground in afternoon trading and ended the session almost unchanged for the second day in a row.

The FTSE closed up 3 points at 6,680.65, with engineering firm Weir Group up 2% on takeover speculation.

Product testing and certification firm Intertek gained 1.8% after rising 7% on Monday having raised its dividend.

On the downside, Meggitt, fell 4.7% after the aerospace components firm reported a fall in profits.

Royal Mail and InterContinental Hotels were both down more than 3%.

Other European markets fared slightly better than London, with Frankfurt and Paris both up 0.4%.

In the currency markets, the pound was almost unchanged against the dollar at 1.6874, and up more than half a cent against the euro at 1.2625.
