(Open): US stocks opened higher on Wednesday, despite weak retail sales figures.

US retail sales edged up a meagre 0.1% in July from last month, weaker than analysts had expected.

The Dow Jones opened up 55.89 points, or 0.34% at 16,616.43, while the broader S&P 500 gained 8.9 points, or 0.46%, to 1,942.65.

The tech-heavy Nasdaq index added 19.86 points, or 0.45%, to trade at 4,409.11.

Shares in the retailer Macy's fell more than 4% after it lowered 2014 sales growth forecasts, saying it couldn't make up for a shortfall in sales from the first quarter when the severe winter weather stopped customers from shopping.

Candy Crush-maker King Digital shares plunged 24% after reporting disappointing sales.
