(Close): London's benchmark index finished lower on Wednesday after two days of gains.

The FTSE 100 was down 23.83 points, or 0.35%, at 6,755.48, with building materials group CRH the top loser.

Standard Chartered rose 0.29% despite news of a fine from US banking regulators. Traders said it had enough capital to cover the penalty.

Balfour Beatty fell 6.68% after the construction company rejected a third takeover offer from rival Carillion.

Carillion shares also fell, finishing down 1.99%, at 330p.

The mining company Glencore rose 0.43% after it said it would launch a share buy-back programme.

Europe's other big share markets, the Cac 40 and Dax, were down 0.32% and 0.21% respectively.
