(Open): US stocks saw further gains on Tuesday morning, after Monday's session saw the S&P 500 index rise above 2,000 for the first time.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 32.56 points, or 0.19%, to 17,109.43, while the the S&P 500 crept up 2.99 points, or 0.15%, to 2,000.91.

The Nasdaq Composite rose 7.19 points, or 0.16%, to 4,564.53.

The confirmed merger of fast-food brands Burger King and Tim Hortons saw both companies' shares rise further.

After rising more than 19% to $32.40 on Monday, Burger King added another 1.8% in early trading, while Tim Hortons leapt another 8% at the start, following its 19% rise in the previous session.

Other winners included Dsw Inc., the footwear and accessories retailer, up 9.4%, while the biggest loser was Trina Solar, down 7.3%.
