(Close): US stocks closed higher on Friday, with the S&P 500 finishing its best August in 14 years.

The broader-based S&P 500 edged back above the 2,000 mark, rising 6.63 points to 2,003.37.

The Dow Jones gained 18.88 points to finish at 17,098.45 and the tech-heavy Nasdaq added 22.58 points to 4,580.27.

The rise continued despite continuing worries over tensions in Ukraine as well as a slow trading day ahead of a three-day weekend.

The day's biggest riser was digital camera maker Digital Ally, which soared 19% in the wake of renewed interest in police surveillance cameras after the shooting of an unarmed black teenager in Ferguson, Missouri earlier in the month.

That interest extended to adventure camera firm GoPro, which also saw its shares rise by nearly 6%.

US markets will be closed on Monday 1 September for the Labor Day holiday.
