(Close): The S&P 500 index closed at a new record high on Friday. It has now marked 33 all-time highs this year.

It rose by 10.06 points to 2,007.7, beating its previous record close of 2,003.37, set on 29 August.

The Dow Jones index of leading blue-chip stocks was up by 67.78 points, or 0.40%, at 17137.36. The tech heavy Nasdaq was up 20.61 points, or 0.45%, to 4582.90.

Merck was up by 1.83% after the US Food and Drug Administration approved its pembrolizumab drug to treat metastatic melanoma.

Other top gainers included Wal-Mart and Nike.
