(Open): US shares were lower in early trading following a disappointing report on the US labour market.

The economy added 142,000 jobs in August - significantly fewer than analysts were expecting.

"Clearly its disappointing, but the preponderance of evidence is that the economy is still gaining a lot of traction," said Russell Price, senior economist at Ameriprise.

The Dow Industrials opened 0.5% lower but then recovered.

The S&P 500 and the Nasdaq were just slightly lower.

Shares in clothes retailer Gap slumped 6% after it reported a 2% fall in like-for-like sales in August.

Also in the retail sector, Family Dollar shares were down 1% after it rejected an improved takeover offer from rival Dollar General, worth $9.1bn.

Dollar General shares fell 2.3%.
