(Close): Shares in the US fell on Monday in directionless trading.

The S&P 500 index fell 6.17 points to 2,001.54.

The Dow Jones index of leading blue-chip stocks was down 25.94 points at 17,111.42 but the tech heavy Nasdaq was up 9.39 points at 4,592.29.

The pound fell more than 1% against the dollar to $1.6115 - its biggest fall in more than a year - after a poll put those in favour of independence in the majority for the first time.

Brent crude oil was below $100 a barrel for the first time in over a year after Chinese and US economic data suggested slower growth.

Shares in the car rental company Hertz rose more than 3% after its chief executive, Mark Frissora, announced he was stepping down for personal reasons, although they closed barely changed.

On the downside, Campbell Soup's shares dropped 3% after it announced that sales rose - but by less than analysts had expected.
