The FTSE 100 closed up 7 points, or 0.11%, at 6806.96.

"People are worried about the Scottish referendum and that's stopping them from doing too much," said Will Hedden, sales trader at IG

Barclays was one of the bigger movers, rising by 2% to 230p on news that John McFarlane, ex boss of insurers Aviva has become chairman.

Shares in Aveva Group, which makes software used to design power plants, shipping and oil and gas facilities, down 25% following a profits warning.

It's their biggest fall since 1998.

Aveva said foreign exchange values would damage its earnings.

On the currency markets, the pound was down 0.08% against the dollar at $1.62420 and down 0.34% against the euro at 1.25340 euros.
