(Close): A run of five winning sessions came to an end for the Dow Industrials on Tuesday with a loss of 0.6%.

Technology shares were among the big losers, Microsoft fell 0.8% after it delayed the launch of its Xbox One game console in China.

Alibaba which made its market debut on Friday with a 38% gain, fell 4% today.

Yahoo shares fell 5.6%. Yahoo made more than $9bn from selling part of its stake in Alibaba. Some investors are wondering what is next for Yahoo.

"My expectations for Yahoo's core business are pretty muted,'" said Brian Wieser, an Internet stocks analyst at Pivotal Research

"There should be pretty tepid growth, if any, in the near term," he added.

Overall the technology focused Nasdaq Index fell 1.4%.

Oilfield equipment maker Dresser-Rand rose 2.6% after Germany's Siemens said it was buying the firm for $7.6bn.

The S&P 500 fell 0.8% to 1,994.
