(Close): US stocks ended the day higher on Wednesday, reversing three consecutive trading days of losses.

European Central Bank boss Mario Draghi's reiterated pledge to keep interest rates low for an extended period helped lift investor confidence.

The Dow Jones rose 154.19 points to 17,210.06, the S&P 500 climbed 15.53 points to 1,998.30 and the tech-focused Nasdaq added 46.53 points to 4,555.22.

Homewares firm Bed Bath & Beyond was the biggest riser on the S&P.

Its shares rose 7.4% after it reported better-than-expected results for its latest quarter.

Another retailer, giant Wal-Mart, saw its shares rise nearly 2% after several news reports revealed Wal-Mart's plans to allow consumers to open bank accounts at the chain at the end of October.

However, shares in management consulting firm Accenture lost nearly 1% after its fourth quarter results came in lower than analysts had been expecting.
