(Close): US shares rose on Friday, rebounding from Thursday's sharp losses on the back of strong economic data.

US economic growth in the second quarter was revised upwards to an annual rate of 4.6%, from 4.2%.

The Dow Jones was up 167.35 points, or 1%, at 17,113.15. The Nasdaq also closed up 1%.

Shares in investment firm Janus Capital soared 43% after renowned investor Bill Gross said he was joining the firm following his departure from Pimco.

Nike jumped more than 12%, making it the biggest winner on the Dow. Late on Thursday, the world's biggest sportswear maker reported better-than-expected results.

After falling 3.8% on Thursday, Apple shares rose 2.9%. Investors had been rattled by Apple's problems with a new operating system.

Blackberry rose 4.7% after it reported a smaller-than-expected quarterly loss of $207m in the three months to the end of August.
