(Close): Stocks on Wall Street fell sharply as worries about global growth prospects knocked investors' confidence.

The sharpest monthly fall in German industrial production since 2009 raised fears about a Eurozone recession, while the IMF trimmed growth forecasts again.

The Dow Jones dropped 272.52 points, to 1.6%, to 16,719.39.

The wider S&P 500 index fell 29.72 points to 1,935.10 while the Nasdaq shed 69.60 points to close at 4,385.20.

Shares in Israeli firm Sodastream plunged 22% after the company said its third quarter revenues were set to be much lower than expected.

The company forecast revenues of about $125m, down from $144.6m a year earlier. Analysts had been expecting revenues of about $150m.

US car maker General Motors also saw its shares fall by nearly 6% after analysts at investment bank Morgan Stanley said profits could be hurt due to investments in production.
