UK car manufacturing in the first nine months of the year hit a six-year high, despite a dip in production last month.

More than 1.13 million cars were produced between January and September, the best comparable figures since 2008, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) said.

Car production in September was 137,068, down 3% on a year earlier.

Figures released earlier this month showed UK car sales hitting a 10-year high in September.

Sales rose 5.6% to 425,861 from a year ago.

'Success story'

Cars made for export during September fell 8.1% from a year ago, while those made for the home market jumped 17.7%.

The overall dip in production for the month was due to car plants re-tooling, the SMMT said. This would help boost future production, it added.

"It is testament to the strength of the automotive industry that continues to break records, yielding the best year-to-date performance for six years and comfortably surpassing one million units," said the group's chief executive, Mike Hawes.

Business Secretary Vince Cable said: "The UK automotive sector is a global success story underpinned by manufacturing innovation, which is what keeps manufacturing moving."
