(Close): US stocks ended the day mixed on Monday after last week's big gains.

On Friday, both the Dow and the S&P 500 had closed at record highs after the Bank of Japan announced a surprise increase in its stimulus programme.

However, trading was more muted Monday, with the Dow Jones shedding 24.28 points to finish at 17,366.24.

The S&P 500 dipped 0.24 points to 2,017.81, while the Nasdaq gained 8.16 points to close at 4,638.91.

Shares in Sapient soared 42% after the digital advertising company agreed to be bought by France's Publicis for $3.7bn.

The deal comes seven months after the collapse of Publicis' bid to boost its US presence via a merger with Omnicom.

Shares in Covance leapt 26% after it agreed to be bought by Laboratory Corp of America Holdings for about $6.1bn. Shares in LabCorp fell 7.4%.

The day's biggest losers were oil and energy firms, which have been hurt by the declining price of oil.

Shares in oil firm Chevron dipped 2.64%.
