(Close): Wall Street rose to a new record after positive US jobless news and a pledge by the European Central Bank to boost economic growth in the eurozone if needed.

The Dow Jones rose 69.94 points, or 0.4%, to 17,554.47, while the S&P 500 advanced 7.63 points, or 0.38%, to 2,023.57.

The Nasdaq lost 17.75 points, or 0.38%, to 4,638.47.

US jobless claims fell by 10,000 to 278,000 last week, a 14-year low.

European shares rose sharply after the ECB said it was poised for action.

Intel was up 0.18% after PC manufacturer Acer reported solid results, raising hopes that the market may be picking up.

Chip developer Qualcomm tumbled 8.6 percent as it disclosed that the US Federal Trade Commission is in the early stages of an investigation into its licensing business.
