(Close): There was little movement on the main US indexes on Friday, but the S&P 500 rose up just enough to reach a record close at 2039.82.

It added 49 points, or 0.02%.

After closing at another record high on Thursday, the Dow Jones fell 18 points, or 0.1%, to 17,634.74, while the Nasdaq rose 8 points to 4688.54.

The latest retail sales figures from the Commerce Department showed US sales rose 0.3% in October, following a 0.3% drop the month before.

Excluding sales of petrol and other volatile items, sales were up 0.5%.

Elsewhere, the price of Brent crude oil made a mild recovery from recent four-year lows, adding almost 3% to rise to $79.64 a barrel.

Shares in Richard Branson's Virgin America airline surged more than 30% in their first day of trading on the Nasdaq, to over $30 a share.

Meanwhile, shares in Apple continued to reach all-time highs on Friday, lifting the company's market capitalisation to approximately $667bn.
