Stocks on Wall Street eke out gains after volatile day

(Close): US stocks eked out small gains on Tuesday after a day of volatile trading.

The Dow Jones added 3.66 points to close at 17,515.23.

The S&P 500 climbed 3.13 points to 2,022.55, while the tech-focused Nasdaq index rose 20.46 points to 4,654.85.

Shares in Delta Airlines increased more than 7% after the carrier's fourth-quarter results beat expectations, despite it posting a $712m loss.

The airline took a $1.2bn charge to cover the cost of writing down the value of fuel-hedging contracts.

Shares in other carriers were also boosted, with Southwest Airlines up 3.3%.

Morgan Stanley shares slipped 0.4% after the bank reported a rise in fourth quarter earnings to $903m.

In after hours trading, shares in Netflix rose nearly 13% after the streaming-TV service beat analysts' expectations for its fourth-quarter earnings.

Shares in IBM slipped slightly, down nearly 2%, despite beating earnings expectations, after the firm issue 2015 guidance below projections.
