London's FTSE 100 edges ahead at close

(Close): London's leading shares closed slightly higher on Thursday after an uneven day.

Mining stocks were among the beneficiaries, with Antofagasta gaining 5.25% to top the winners' list and BHP Billiton rising 2.8%.

Housebuilders' shares were also among the gainers, with Taylor Wimpey up 2.8%, while Persimmon added 1.7%.

Overall, the benchmark FTSE 100 index closed up 9.81 points or 0.14% at 6,868.96.

On the currency markets, the pound was up 0.83% against the dollar at $1.3149 and was also up 0.5% against the euro at €1.1605.
