An American university is launching a course studying the politics of Beyonce.

The Politicizing Beyonce course, offered by Rutgers University, will compare Beyonce's lyrics with texts by black feminist writers.

Professor Kevin Allred, the lecturer who launched the course, said Beyonce's music was a "nice gateway" for getting students interested in race and gender politics.

He told BBC Radio 5 live's Up All Night: "They know her music... so it makes for an exciting way to dive into these discussions."
