Election 2016: Polling starts across Tyneside, Wearside, Northumberland and County Durham

Voting has begun in elections being held in Tyneside, Wearside, Northumberland and County Durham.

Votes are being cast for one third of council seats in Gateshead, Newcastle, North Tyneside, South Tyneside and Sunderland.

There are also elections for police and crime commissioners for the Durham and Northumbria police forces.

Residents in North Tyneside are voting in a referendum on the post of elected mayor.

Polling stations opened their doors at 07:00 BST and will close at 22:00.

Across England elections are taking place for more than 120 councils and 36 police and crime commissioners.
