Comedy sequel The Hangover Part II has gone straight to the top of the UK and Ireland box office chart after making £10.41m in its opening weekend.

A fifth of that total - £2.03m - came from previews held last Thursday, according to Screen Daily.

The film's debut on the chart saw Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides fall one place to number two.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid 2 made its debut at three, followed by Thor and Fast & Furious 5.

Animated feature Rio climbed one place this week to number six, with horror film Insidious in seventh place.

At number eight was Hanna, followed by Attack the Block and Water for Elephants.

The Hangover Part II set a new record for a comedy at the US box office this weekend with takings of $86.5m (£52.5m).

Bradley Cooper and Zach Galifianakis appear in the film, which has received lukewarm reviews on both sides of the Atlantic.
