Dame Helen Mirren has been honoured with the 2,488th star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in Los Angeles.

"I really can't believe it," said the 67-year-old actress, who won an Oscar for her portrayal of The Queen in 2007.

"I'm going to finally lie next to Colin Firth - something I've been wanting to do for a very long time," she said.

Firth, who received his Walk of Fame star in 2011, is also an Oscar-winner, for his portrayal of King George in the 2010 film The King's Speech.

"I think it's very good for the British monarchy that, here on Hollywood Boulevard, the King and the Queen are going to actually sleep together, for the rest of history," Dame Helen said at the unveiling.

The British star is nominated for a Golden Globe this year for her work in Hitchcock.

During her career, she has also received four Baftas, three Golden Globes, four Emmys and two best actress prizes at Cannes Film Festival.

Dame Helen was introduced at the Walk Of Fame by playwright and director David Mamet, who recently worked with her on a biopic of music producer Phil Spector.

"Helen's performances reap higher praise than being praised," he said. "They're loved."

He also quoted British poet Rupert Brooke, saying of Dame Helen's starry paving slab, "somewhere there will be a little piece of foreign ground that is always a bit of England, and that's right there".

Dame Helen added: "I am so very proud to be henceforth walked on upon, have fries dropped upon, maybe even be peed upon, by future generations of tourists, Angelinos and their dogs.

"But, please, no chewing gum."

She also revealed plans to visit the plaque again, in disguise.

"I am going to have to come here tomorrow and have another look at it, when everybody is gone," she said. "People are just coming and going, I will be in disguise just standing here, leaning up against there."
