Does sex sell in classical music?

22 June 2013 Last updated at 00:07 BST

Jenni Murray, the presenter of BBC Radio 4's Woman's Hour, made her debut as a conductor today with the BBC Philharmonic and the Overture to Bizet's Carmen for a special edition of the programme.

In an article penned for the Radio Times, she said the women most welcome in classical music are those willing to go along with the idea that "sex sells".

Newsnight was joined by string quartet Bond and Telegraph music critic Michael White to debate the issue.
