Spike Lee on crowdfunding new film via Kickstarter

Oscar-winning director Spike Lee is asking fans and audiences to fund his latest project through Kickstarter - an online platform where fans can put their own money in to help bring creative projects to fruition.

It is the latest example of high-profile directors turning their backs on the traditional Hollywood studio system, which in turn is seeing some disappointing returns for its roster of summer blockbusters.

Lee told BBC Newsnight that studios were reluctant to fund smaller projects.
