How Qatar woman topped Art Power list

24 October 2013 Last updated at 09:48 BST

The head of the Qatar Museums Authority (QMA) has been named the most powerful figure in the art world.

Sheikha Al-Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani came top of ArtReview magazine's annual Power 100 due to her organisation's "vast purchasing power".

The BBC's arts editor Will Gompertz explained Sheikha Al-Mayassa's rise from number 90 in the Power 100 in 2011 to number one in 2013.

He speculated that Qatar's emergence into the art world "is about creating a knowledge economy".

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4's Today programme on Thursday 24 October 2013.
