Stevens shot to fame in Downton Abbey, which first aired in 2010, but he chose to leave the series in 2012.
His character was dramatically killed off in last year's Christmas special.
Stevens appeared on Broadway in 2012 in The Heiress opposite Hollywood actress Jessica Chastain.
Since then, he has appeared in period film Summer in February and Wikileaks drama The Fifth Estate with Benedict Cumberbatch.
The latter was a box office flop and received mixed reviews. Stevens can next be seen in the upcoming thriller A Walk Among the Tombstones.
The finale of the fourth series of Downton Abbey airs on ITV on Sunday.
