Actor Robert Redford addressed crowds at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival as he picked up the American Riviera Award.

The accolade was created to recognise an actor who has had a strong influence on American cinema.

Redford accepted the award, saying coming to the festival was "a little bit like coming home", having spent a lot of time in town surfing and in the mountains.

"This festival is honouring your community, and I take this award very seriously," he said.

Previous recipients of the American Riviera Award have included Martin Scorsese, Sandra Bullock, Tommy Lee Jones, Diane Lane and Philip Seymour Hoffman.
