Billy Crystal is returning to TV, more than 30 years after he last appeared in a series on the small screen.

The 66-year-old actor will play a veteran star of the comedy world, who is unwillingly paired with an upcoming comedian in a late-night sketch show.

Frozen actor Josh Gad will play the younger comedian in the 13-part series.

Fox TV's Nick Grad said the pair had "amazing" chemistry, and claimed it was "certain to become one of the best comedies on TV".

Based on a Swedish show, The Comedians marks Crystal's first regular role on TV since portraying Jodie Dallas on ABC's spoof serial Soap, which ran from 1977-81.

"We're incredibly excited about The Comedians and the fact that Billy Crystal will be making his return to series television on FX," said Grad.

Crystal starred in the film Parental Guidance in 2012, and returned to voice Monsters, Inc's Mike in the hit sequel Monsters University last year.

The Comedians is set to premiere next year.
