The Big Picture: The dancing dame

Dame Monica Mason beside her new portrait and with Diana Vere and Rudolf Nureyev in 1970

A newly commissioned portrait of the former ballerina and Royal Ballet director Dame Monica Mason has been unveiled at the National Portrait Gallery in London. Artist Saied Dai met his subject shortly before her retirement in 2012, after a distinguished career that saw her perform with Rudolf Nureyev (pictured right between Diana Vere and Mason in 1970) and nurture the careers of such celebrated choreographers as Wayne McGregor and Christopher Wheeldon.
