Should Ed Sheeran top BBC Radio 1Xtra Power List?

15 July 2014 Last updated at 00:43 BST

A 'Power List' published by the BBC's Radio 1Xtra music station has sparked a row, after white musician Ed Sheeran came top.

Radio 1Xtra is described on its website as a "black music network", and some black artists have taken to social media to criticise the result.

But the station has defended the list, with music manager Austin Daboh saying it is "misguided" to link it to race.

Newsnight's Stephen Smith looks at the background and recording artist XO, who has collaborated with Ed Sheeran, and Neil McCormick, chief music critic of the Daily Telegraph, discuss the row.
