Mike Nichols, one of Hollywood's best-known directors, has died at the age of 83.

He was among an elite few who managed to win all of America's big four entertainment awards - an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and a Tony.

His first film, Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, starred Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor, while The Graduate - featuring Dustin Hoffman in his breakout role - earned Nichols his first Oscar.

And the hits continued - on screen and stage - over many decades.
