Image caption A lift shaft at a Las Vegas hotel survived an implosion designed to bring down the building. Most of the 12-storey Clarion casino-hotel was brought down by the demolition, but despite 4,400lb (two tonnes) of explosives, the lift shaft dropped just four storeys and was still standing when the dust settled - albeit leaning to one side.
