Britain gains first ethnic Chinese MP

British voters have elected their first MP of ethnic Chinese origin, after

Alan Mak won the seat of Havant in southern England for the Conservatives.

He replaces David Willetts as MP for the safe Conservative seat, securing a majority of 13,920 over UKIP.

The 31-year-old was born in Britain and grew up in York, where his Chinese-born parents ran a takeaway.

Conservatives win big at Winchester City Council as Lib Dem leader loses seat

The Conservatives have taken a firm hold of power on

Winchester City Council with a string of victories across the district.

The party increased their majority to 11 seats, taking two from the Liberal Democrats on a day which saw them lose their leader.

The Conservative Party has maintained its majority on

Cherwell District Council.

The Tories won 14 seats, Labour two and one seat went to an independent.


Call for a 'better politics'

Fiona MacTaggart's victory in

Slough was a rare piece of good news for Labour in our region, and she used the opportunity to call for a rethink of our electoral system.

She said: "People feel that no party is really getting what they feel and we need to find a better way of doing our politics. It's striking that our system has produced very few seats for some parties which have got millions of votes."

Weymouth and Portland Borough Council remains under no overall control.

The Conservatives gained three seats but are still five seats short of a majority.

Former Labour MP John Denham has spoken about the defeat of his party's candidate Rowenna Davis in his former Southampton Itchen seat.

"The truth is that we were defeated not so much by a surge in new votes for the Conservatives but our failure to win back some of the people who have been Labour voters that didn't vote for us in 2010 and clearly, from the figures last night, a significant number of them went with UKIP."

Jeanette Baker has described the local authority result as "amazing".

She said: "I can't say that I'm not happy about being elected a district councillor. The turnout was amazing, no matter what party, the interest in what was happening in their country was evident."

Mrs Baker said that she would work to ensure Witney's infrastructure to support new housing in the area.

Remember the crumpet row?

The Beer, Baccy and Scratchings Party, who were

forced to change their name from the Beer, Baccy and Crumpets Party shortly before the Electoral Commission deadline, won 136 votes in Eastleigh.

Not enough to cause a political landslide but enough to add some flavour to the campaign.

The "crumpet" part of their name had to be changed after it was deemed to be demeaning to women.

Mr Blay offered his hand to his Conservative opponent, who held on to the seat at Hampshire North East, following the count at Hart Leisure Centre, Fleet.

Police have started an investigation into alleged comments made by Mr Blay, who was filmed apparently threatening to shoot his rival.
