The Brits has left the building:

Thanks for joining us for 2015's Brit Awards - it's all over for another year! A good night for Sam Smith and Ed Sheeran, who both took two awards during a fairly average ceremony.

We're already looking forward to photos of the multiple after-parties - but whatever happens, it will have to be something pretty special to get everyone talking about anything other than Madonna.

Madonna: 'I'm fine!'

We were totally consumed with shock at Madonna's fall, we missed most of her performance of Living For Love. We hope she's not hurt!

Madonna's Instagram
Instagram

Stop the press! It sounds like she's ok. She just posted a picture of her cape on her Instagram account referring to her extremely apt song lyrics: "Armani hooked me up! My beautiful cape was tied too tight! But nothing can stop me and love really lifted me up! Thanks for your good wishes! I'm fine!"

Phew!

Madonna breaks the internet

Madonna
PA

Twitter erupted as Madonna took a tumble during her performance of Living for Love that closed this evening's Brits, here's some of the reaction:

  • Sanjay Sood-Smith: "I think Madonna may well have just broken the internet by falling backwards down some stairs on the Brits, sorry Kim Kardashian."
  • Dan Deacon: "Can someone tell me @Madonna is ok ? Was this one of those Brits meets Casualty hybrid programmes????"
  • Jarett Wieselman: ""Poor Madonna" is trending worldwide right now."
  • Richard Madeley: "And Madonna's recovery from a really bad fall was the perfect reply. Well done M."
  • Little Boots: "At least someone did a performance exciting enough to involve the risk of tripping up."
  • Simon: "Forget about Ellen's most tweeted selfie. That Madonna vids gonna break some records."
  • John Niven: "The good news is I bet Madonna is taking that tumble in really good humour. having a laugh. Not sacking anyone."

***GASP*** Madonna has fallen down the stairs!!!

Ed Sheeran seemed pretty bowled over by who presented his award, saying "Russell Crowe everyone! Sick!" as he got on stage.

He told the crowd his album "took a long time to make and I didn't expect this".

"It's been a very good year for British music and I think it's a night to celebrate the whole thing."

"It's nice to meet you," he directed at Russell as he left the stage.

Simon Cowell picked up One Direction's fifth Brit Award for them.

"This is so exciting," he said. "The boys are in Japan and made up a speech in case they did win... They want to thank their fans... I'm incredibly excited and want to say officially thank you to the boys, you're amazing."

Someone alert health and safety! There's a lot of water on stage and there's electricity from a microphone! Paloma Faith is dicing with electrocution during her performance.

She obviously forgot to thank some people earlier after her award win as she's thanked a few more guys at the end of the song.

Sam Smith took the stage for a third time this evening to collect his award.

"I really didn't expect this," he said before thanking his "amazing team" including his three managers (yes, three).

He also thanked his "amazing wife Josephine" and manager as well as "people like Lionel Richie and The Commodores and Earth Wind and Fire and James Brown - the people that invented this genre of funk."

You might not have heard much of the Kanye West song, with ITV having to mute the sound almost every 10 seconds... but, for some fans, it was the first chance to hear a song they've been hankering after for two years.

West first talked about All Day in a 2013 GQ interview, saying it had the ferocious intensity of a Jay-Z track, "but Jay's not on there".

Whether the Brit Awards was the right place to premiere such a dark, inscrutable track is another matter... but West has never been one to compromise.

Brit Award veterans Take That are the next act to take the stage, their first time performing as a three piece at the event.

Pharrell appeared by video link waving his Brit and said: "I appreciate you guys, your great nation, for turning the song [Happy] into what it's become. It means the world so it's an honour for me to hold this."

After handing Sam Smith his award, Kim Kardashian told the arena: "I want everyone to get on their feet and welcome my husband, Kanye West."

It must have been pretty sweary, as anyone watching the ITV broadcast didn't hear much in between the bursts of flamethrowers on stage. And was he saying "I love Zane Lowe" at the end?

Sam Smith's speech

"Oh my gosh, since I was a little kid I dreamed of people all over the world singing my songs and although I've got a long way to go, this shows that I'm stepping in the right direction. So thank you to all my fans."

Brit Awards - Your views

Lots of you have been getting in touch with your thoughts on the awards so far:

Cal Turner tweets: "Best British group - Royal Blood #BRITs2015. Never heard of them. Does this mean I'm officially old? Lol."

Stuie Neale: "So glad Ed & Taylor won awards

Jake Allen emails: "Not having one of the best bands in the world & by far the best current British Band - Kasabian - makes these "awards" an absolute joke.

Paul Greenwood: "Shouldn't you actually have more than 1 album out to be classed as best British group? #justsayin"

Ferne McCann: "Errrrrrmm @royalblooduk started 2 years ago for fun. They are royally amazing."

Taylor Swift's just come backstage with her Brit Award.

"I'm too excited," she told the press. "I need to calm down."

The US star talked again about her slow build success in the UK saying: "I started out playing King's College and eight years later I'm getting ready to play Hyde Park. It's like... What?"

She added: "I can't believe all the things I have to do tonight are over and now I get to hang out.

"Ed Sheeran's about to play so I'm going to run."

And run she did.

Paloma wells up

Paloma Faith was fighting back tears as she accepted her Brit, third time lucky after being nominated in 2011 and 2013.

"I'm so moved! It's been a long time coming. It's taken me 14 years to stand up here and accept this award and it means so much to me."

She apologised for not doing a short speech and rambling on, before ending with: "I want to dedicate this to all the underdogs and all the grafters."

Ed Sheeran has taken to the stage to perform his new track, Bloodstream.

Taylor's British mates

Ellie Goulding announced "Someone I'm so proud to call my friend - Taylor Swift" as the winner of best international female.

"Oh my god, wow," said Taylor on stage. "I've been coming to England and playing shows for eight years and this is my first Brit Award, I'm so happy."

"Honestly I know I wouldn't be up here if it wasn't for one of my best friends, who took me to pubs and taught me to make a cup of tea. Ed Sheeran! And my other British friends Cara (Delevingne) and Ellie (Goulding) and Sam (Smith).

"I'm very lucky to have them in my life. I'm very lucky to have my British fans - I love you and I'm very lucky to have my first Brit Award, thank you."

No sign of a stage storm from Kanye either, who seemed to have stayed in his seat.

Time for another performance - this time Royal Blood, fresh from their best British group prize.

The neon signs dressing the O2 Arena carry the same quotes as the ones Tracey Emin scribbled all over this year's Brits trophy.

They read: "Congratulations on your talent, on your life. On everything you give to others. Thank you."
