Prince: 'I'm no different to anyone'

The music magazine NME has put together some of Prince's words from an interview he did with them in 1996.

I’m no different to anyone. Yes, I have fame and wealth and talent, but I certainly don’t consider myself any better than anyone who has no fame, wealth or talent. People fascinate me. They’re amazing! Life fascinates me! And I’m no more fascinated by my own life than by anyone else’s.

I am deeply shocked to hear of Prince’s passing. 1/4

Prince was a revolutionary artist, a great musician, composer, a wonderful lyricist, a startling guitar player... 2/4

...but most importantly, authentic in every way. 3/4

Prince's talent was limitless. He was one of the most unique and talented artists of the last 30 years 4/4

'King amongst musicians'

It's heartbreaking news. Everyone is truly shocked. Bowie, now this. The two most talented adventurous creative talents of their respective generations.

A genius in the world of funk and soul. A trendsetter and a tastemaker. An electric performer with an insatiable appetite for music. He might have been named Prince but he was a King amongst musicians.

President Obama: Prince did it all

Today, the world lost a creative icon. Michelle and I join millions of fans from around the world in mourning the sudden death of Prince.

Few artists have influenced the sound and trajectory of popular music more distinctly, or touched quite so many people with their talent. As one of the most gifted and prolific musicians of our time, Prince did it all. Funk. R&B. Rock and roll. He was a virtuoso instrumentalist, a brilliant bandleader, and an electrifying performer.

'A strong spirit transcends rules,' Prince once said -- and nobody's spirit was stronger, bolder, or more creative. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, his band, and all who loved him.‎

'Total shock'

Style icons: Prince and David Bowie

Lee Trewhela, Cornish entertainment journalist, writing in the West Briton makes the connect between the two music legends.

Like Bowie, Prince made people question sexuality. Like Bowie, he had an innate sense of style. And while Bowie brought the funk to white man's music, Prince was clever enough to cross over unlike any other black artist of the time - even Jacko - by integrating rock guitar into soul, knocking down racial stereotypes in the process.”

Rest in peace to one of my favorite artists of all time. Haven't loved an artist as long or as consistently as I have Prince. My dream was to one day collaborate with him or play drums for him. He use to come watch #DJAM and I play.

Those nights went down as some of my favourite. I taught my kids about him from a very young age and has always stayed a favorite in our family, we even got to see him play a couple times together. Sad day, we lost one of the funkiest and most inspiring artists of our time. One of the greatest guitars players of our time. To me he was truly a musical genius, a true original.
