Burkini fines paid

As France bans burkinis - full body swimsuits - from some beach resorts, a wealthy businessman has offered to pay any fines imposed on women who have been caught wearing them.

The Independent reports Rachid Nekkaz has already paid out more than £200,000 in fines and legal fees.

》 #Liberals in #France have nothing better to do than to fight for women to use #burkini ! No wonder France is in bad shape ! #BurkiniBan

You're allowed to have the choice & freedom of bearing all yet you're not allowed to choose to cover yourself? What a crazy world. #Burkini

Judge will be judged on Strictly

Dugdale digs Smith

Kezia Dugdale, Leader of the Scottish Labour Party, has been trending on Twitter as she is backing Owen Smith to become the next Labour Party leader.

Since her interview on Radio 4's Today programme this morning, there have been 5,500 tweets that include her name.

But many on Twitter have responded negatively to Ms Dugdale's announcement - apart from a lone voice, it seems.

#keziadugdale trending with almost 6k tweets, she must be thinking "I've never been so popular" and she'd be right!

Not to be harsh but the SNP have dominated Scotland then the Tories & then Labour. Kezia Dugdale should focus on that and not Jeremy Corbyn

So many tweets today from Corbynistas observing that @kezdugdale is a "loser" but they don't seem to respect winners like @SadiqKhan either

Thanks @kezdugdale for backing Owen. #Owen2016

Japanese PM's revelation

One of the highlights of #Rio2016's #closingceremony was the appearance of Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

As Brazil handed over the Olympic reins to #Tokyo2020, the Japanese video game character Mario was shown traveling from the other side of the globe to reveal himself as Shinzo Abe.

Court of Appeal ruling

Labour's National Executive Committee (NEC) was within its rights to stop new members voting in its leadership contest, the Court of Appeal has ruled.

The NEC had decided that full members would not be able to vote if they had not had at least six months' continuous membership up to July 12.

Reaction on Twitter was lively, with just over 4,000 tweets posted so far.

Given the leeway court of appeal has given NEC on this issue, wonder if a decision to require equal nominations would have also been upheld.

"Court of Appeal" I'm a new member, Jun 27, but this is anti contractual. They misled thousands. Sneaky tactics. #CorbynOut

I don't know whether to laugh, cry or cheer about Court of Appeal ruling. @UKLabour officials must take responsibility for confusion created

So much wrong with that Court of Appeal judgement. Making claimants pay and effectively telling PLP they can say what they like

30,000kg of hot and dead fish

Areas of China are on "orange alert" at the moment because of a heatwave.

Temperatures in some areas in Sichuan province have exceeded 40C (104F).

On one farm in the province more than 30,000kg of fish have been found dead, a result of the excessive heat.

The farmer, Mr Jiang, told "Cover News": "I have never seen so many dead fish... the temperature is too hot, the water is boiling, people cannot stand outside for over an hour".

Social media users have been reporting their surprise that fish can die in hot temperatures and are wondering if it is bad for fish, what hope is there for them...

Time to say goodbye Philae

Professor Monica Grady describes the final days of communication with the Philae lander

Philae, the first robot to land on a comet, has reached the end of its mission as scientists are about to cut off its communication cords for good.

The plucky robot landed on Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko in November 2014.

After a troubled landing, the probe was unable to fulfil all its scientific missions but little Philae captured the public's imagination back in 2014.

Scientists decided to give up trying to contact Philae on February but the recent news mean scientists will switch the probe's communication unit off.

Will this be Philae's last tweet from space?

It’s time for me to say goodbye. Tomorrow, the unit on @ESA_Rosetta for communication with me will be switched off forever...

French media not publishing pictures of church attacker

In an editorial, Le Monde says it will no longer feature photographs of those behind attacks such as the one in Saint-Etienne-du-Rouvray.

It was doing so "to avoid giving posthumous credit" to those responsible, while adding that the intention of killing Father Hamel was to provoke "the blind vengeance that would place the entire country under the empire of hatred".

BFMTV, a French news channel, made a similar editorial decision.

Desperate for diapers

People lining up in a queue to buy diapers and nappies outside a pharmacy in a Venezuelan city on May 2016
Reuters

Parenting is never an easy job but it got that little bit harder for Venezuelans this month when Kimberly-Clark, one of the few firms producing basic necessities like nappies and toilet paper, closed its factory in the country, saying it could no longer get hold of the materials it needed to manufacture its products.

Venezuela has been suffering a shortage of food and basic commodities for more than a year because of an economic crisis and parents there have turned to social media to source nappies and other necessities like baby formula.

Twitter and Instagram accounts featuring the word "trueque" (swap) have been set up in recent months so Venezuelans can exchange items.

Various local Facebook groups, such as "Nappy and formula swaps for babies in Mariara" have also emerged with the same aim.

Pañal Pampers verde talla M, 24 unidades, cambio por 1 kg leche en polvo o 1 kg azúcar @vzlatrueque @truequejusto @jcuencama

"I'll swap 1kg of powdered milk or sugar for Pampers pack size medium" is an example of one offer (above).

The social media system is presumably a bit easier than dealing with queues to buy nappies - especially when standing in line for nine hours still doesn't guarantee you any.

An episode of Fireman Sam has been pulled from Channel 5's streaming site after a page from the Koran was spotted in a scene.

The original episode first aired in October 2014 on Channel 5 but the Koran has only recently been spotted by an eagle-eyed viewer.

The story generated interest on social media with more than 11,000 tweets referring to the controversy.

Customers v High Street retailers

There was a time when a strongly worded letter or "can I speak to your manager" meant your complaint would be heard by a company, but social media is now seen as a good way to get your complaint out in the open.

When you pay 50 euro getting your makeup done by a "professional" in urban decay and you come out looking like a badly deformed potatoe. First photo was urban decays "look" second is when I wiped it all off and done it myself. NEVER AGAIN.
Shauna Adamson/Facebook

Shauna Adamson, from Dublin in Ireland, took to Facebook to share her unsatisfactory experience after having her make-up applied by Urban Decay staff at a Debenhams store.

"Looking like a badly deformed potato" is how she described her new make-up.

She received many supportive comments since last Saturday but some questioned whether if she made it all up. She defended herself against the accusations.

A spokesperson for Urban Decay has apologised to her and offered her a free make-over and a full refund.

Postal deliveries: A drone's' eye view

Drones delivering our weekly shopping could become a reality sooner than you think.

Michelle Obama's speech praised by Democrats

Michelle Obama hits out at Trump

US first lady Michelle Obama delivered a rebuke to Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump in her speech at the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia without even naming him.

"The hateful language... from public figures on TV does not represent the true spirit of this country," she said, to loud cheers and applause. "Don't stoop to their level. Our motto is, when they go low, we go high."

The first lady's passionate speech wowed the Democratic party faithful.

Unsurprisingly, social media was filled with praise of her barnstorming performance but not all Republicans were happy, with a few criticising her comments.

There were almost 330,000 tweets discussing her speech immediately after she finished, and hours later her name was still trending globally.

Donald Trump hasn't tweeted about it... so far.
