Local elections in Hull and North East Lincolnshire - what happened

  • Labour has maintained control of Hull City Council.
  • North East Lincolnshire Council remains hung with no party securing overall control
  • The Liberal Democrats took three wards from Labour, Avenue ward in Hull and East Marsh and Park in North East Lincolnshire.
  • In North East Lincolnshire, the lowest turnout was in South ward with 21.23% of those eligible taking voting.The highest turnout  was in Scartho, with 33.12%. 
  • Ahead of the results in Hull, MP Karl Turner said he was concerned about voter apathy at local elections. The city has four out of 10 areas nationwide where the fewest people have voted in recent local elections.
  • Voting has also taken place to elect a police and crime commissioner for the region, with the results expected later today.

Labour has maintained control of Hull City Council, with the Liberal Democrats making a number of gains across the wider region. But voter apathy was the main talking point, with just 21% of the electorate turning out in one ward.

Hull East MP Karl Turner tells the BBC he is concerned about voter apathy at local elections.

The city has four of the top 10 areas nationwide where the fewest people have voted in recent local elections.

Despite this, Mr Turner thinks Labour will do well and maintain control of the city council.

North East Lincolnshire Council Ward Elections 2016

There is an election for one councillor in each of the following wards: Croft Baker, East Marsh, Freshney, Haverstoe, Heneage, Humberston and New Waltham, Immingham, Park, Scartho, South, Sidney Sussex and Yarborough. 

Voters will also elect a new Humberside Police and Crime Commissioner.
