Smoke alarms plea after house fire death

The fire service is urging people to check their smoke alarms after the body of a woman was found after a house fire in Farnborough.

Our thoughts are with the family at this difficult time. We are now working to establish the cause and we urge all our residents to ensure they have working smoke alarms and test them regularly. We would encourage anyone with elderly or vulnerable neighbours to keep an eye on their welfare and raise any concerns with the relevant agency.

Revised Farnborough airspace plans 'blight on the countryside'

A council leader has branded plans to increase the airspace around Farnborough Airport as a "blight on the countryside".

TAG Farnborough launched a new consultation earlier this month after amending its original plans that were tabled in 2014.

The operator of the business airport says the modified plans include less new controlled airspace than the 2014 proposals.

Imagine sitting for a quiet lunch with friends in the garden of one of East Hampshire’s beautiful rural pubs and having to stop mid-conversation while a flight goes overhead. That’s not what I would want, and it’s not what I think local residents want.

Travel plans for Victorious Festival

Music fans are being urged to plan their journeys to the Victorious Festival in Portsmouth, featuring the Manic Street Preachers and Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds, over the weekend.

More than 120,000 people are expected at this year's festival on Southsea seafront on Saturday and Sunday.

A special Victorious park and ride service from Lakeside North Harbour Car Park will be operating.

Our traffic team has various ways to manage traffic flow but the biggest help is to reduce the number of cars coming into the city. I would encourage residents attending the festival to walk, cycle or use public transport wherever possible.

First GCSE results for Swanage School

Among the thousands of students receiving their GCSE results today, it's a particularly big day for those at Swanage School.

The school opened in 2013, so these are the first set of students to sit their GCSEs.

We're chuffed to bits as our headline figures are very good. They are our first students - we'll remember them fondly. When we give out their certificates there'll be a few tears.

Chinese lantern warning on island

The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service has issued a warning about the dangers of using flares, Chinese lanterns or fireworks in dry weather after a barn narrowly avoided going up in flames.

The barn’s owner, who spotted a flare landing on the roof of the barn on 18 August, and firefighters were able to extinguish the flames before the fire was able to take hold.

In periods of dry weather, it only takes a spark or a smallest piece of smouldering material to start a fire, which can spread quickly with devastating effects.
