'Oi, tweeter, you're on!' - Baldock Town's FA Cup social media coverage suffers

Kris Holland

BBC News

The magic of the FA Cup takes many forms.

Whether it's plucky underdogs defeating higher league opposition, iconic goals from the best players in the game - or putting your club's social media manager on as a late substitute...

While it will be January before Premier League sides join this season's competition, non-league sides are already progressing through the qualifying stages.

On Sunday, Spartan South Midlands League Division One side Baldock Town beat North Greenford United from the division above 3-1 in their preliminary round match, but it was their social media coverage - or lack thereof - which has caught our attention...

View more on twitter

Asked how they rated the performance of their "Twitter correspondent", the club replied: "He was very good. Should have started."

The Hertfordshire side's reward is £1,925 from the FA Cup prize fund and a place in the first qualifying round where they will host Thame United - hopefully with a substitute tweeter in place.

Sarah Jenkins

BBC Local Live

The new series of The Great British Bake Off will commence next week, and two out of the 12 contestants are from Hertfordshire.

You can watch a sneak peak of the first episode below.

Great British Bake Off: We had a sneak peek

So who do you need to throw your support behind?

First, there's Steven, 34, and has a background in marketing.

He credits his mother, Judi, as his cooking mentor and says he likes to put twists on recipes from her old cookbooks.

Steven has managed to lose an astonishing five stone by cooking all his own meals.

Next up there's former school teacher Stacey, 42.

Her earliest memories of baking are helping her grandmother make bread and butter pudding.

She started to take the craft seriously when she was at University, and likes to incorporate her Jewish heritage into her baking.

Tuesday's weather: Murky at first, brighter later

Georgina Burnett

BBC Weather

It’s a misty murky start to the day for some of us - looking largely dry, but it may be a little damp in the air in some spots because of the low cloud.

That cloud should break later to give us some brightness and even some sunny spells.

Top temperature across the BBC East region: 23C (73F).

Lost your drone near Aylesbury jail?

Helen Burchell

BBC News

Police are hoping to "reunite" a drone with its owner(s) after the craft came down near Aylesbury Prison on Sunday afternoon.

View more on twitter

Thames Valley Police tweeted a picture of the downed drone asking people if they'd lost one near the jail, and suggesting the owner comes in to collect it from "one of our friendly officers".

Drones have been used on a number of occasions to deliver illegal items including mobile phones and drugs to prisoners.

Earlier this year the Prison Service and police agreed to pool intelligence to stop drones flying contraband to inmates in England and Wales.

Now, while Thames Valley officers aren't suggesting this drone near this prison was doing anything it shouldn't have been - and there was nothing found on board - they're beginning to wonder why the rightful owner still hasn't come forward to claim his wayward flying machine.

Female supporters 'asked to lift tops' at Stevenage game

Kris Holland

BBC News

Supporters of Grimsby Town have made a formal complaint to Stevenage Football Club after female fans were reportedly asked to lift their tops.

In an open letter, the Mariners Trust allege that a female steward asked fans to show their bras as part of the security procedure as they entered the Lamex Stadium on Saturday, in view of male staff and supporters.

Amanda Jacks from the Football Supporters Federation (FSF) said: "I am very shocked, not least because I have been doing this job for 10 years.

"Just when you think you've heard it all, something like this crops up.

"I think it's an absolute one-off incident and we will work hard to make sure it stays as a one-off incident."

The FSF say they are aware of at least four supporters who were asked to lift their tops.

Stevenage FC have been approached for comment.
