Campaign to protect 70s housing estate in Milton Keynes

An architectural group is campaigning for a 1970s housing estate in Milton Keynes to be given conservation area status.

Eaglestone, Milton Keynes

Eaglestone was built by the architect Ralph Erskine, who also designed the Grade II-listed Byker housing estate in Newcastle upon Tyne.

The Twentieth Century Society has recommended the northern part of Eaglestone be given special protection by planning authorities.

The Society said: "Erskine was concerned that the form of his residential buildings should enhance the life of the occupants and this is evident at Eaglestone.

"The pedestrian environment, segregated from traffic, is intended to encourage social exchange while houses are divided in ‘gossip groups’ or clusters around pedestrian paths and open spaces."
