It's been a tough year or so for Aston Villa , but alongside the recent revival in their senior team's Championship fortunes (five wins in six before the international break) - they also deserve a shout out for their excellent work in the FA People's Cup disability categories.

Uniquely, Villa teams qualified from the first round in all five disability categories : Adult Female (straight to finals), Youth and Adult Male Premiership, Championship and League (all competing today).

In the Youth category, they've made it through to today's final against Cedarsfield after a goal bonanza of a group section - both scoring 18 goals in three matches.

Cedarsfield beat Villa in the final group game 3-1 to top the table. Who will win the rematch and today's trophy?

Authorities must do more to prevent radicalisation, Birmingham vigil told

A former government counter-terrorism adviser says the authorities need to do more to engage with hard-to-reach Muslim communities in Birmingham, if attacks like the one seen on Wednesday in London are to be avoided.

Jahan Mahmood's comments come as a unity meeting was held at Birmingham Central Mosque today. 

Imam Dr Ather Hussein spoke to condemn the attack, saying Islam does not condone the taking of innocent lives.

Mona Elshazly, originally from Egypt but now living in Handsworth Wood, said: "I'm here because I feel sorry for what's happened in Westminster and to show solidarity for people in London and to tell everyone that what's happened doesn't happen under my name or Muslims' name."

Officer charged with assaulting a woman in custody

A serving West Midlands Police officer has been charged with assaulting a woman in custody.

Sgt Matthew Shaw, aged 40, is alleged to have assaulted the woman at Birmingham Central Police Station on 13 February 2015.

Police watchdog the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) investigated a complaint it said it received in April 2016. 

Mr Shaw is due to appear before magistrated in Newcastle-under-Lyme on Monday.

'Cannabis factory' worth £60k found after motorist arrested

Cannabis with a street value of about £60,000 has been seized by police after they found a drugs factory in the West Midlands. 

Staffordshire Police say they arrested a driver on Hednesford Road, Cannock after they saw him using a mobile phone at the wheel and then found cannabis in the car.

The force says the 38-year-old was arrested on suspicion of possession of cannabis with intent to supply. 

Officers say they then searched a house in Lothians Road, Pelsall, where they found 51 cannabis plants and "a large amount" of harvested cannabis.

Germanwings crash two years on: Father denies pilot crashed plane on purpose

The father of the Germanwings pilot who crashed his aircraft in the French Alps killing all 150 people on board says his son did not deliberately bring the plane down.

Prosecutors believe Andreas Lubitz locked his co-pilot out of the cabin before flying the aircraft into the mountainside. 

On the second anniversary of the crash Guenther Lubitz said his son was not depressed at the time but that he was overcome by fumes in the cockpit. 

One of the passengers who died was 50-year-old Martyn Matthews from Wolverhampton.

Former Bishop of Lichfield, Keith Sutton, dies

A former Bishop of Lichfield, the Right Reverend Keith Sutton, has died aged 82 .

The news has been confirmed by the Lichfield Diocese - he served in the role from 1984 to 2003.

Before becoming Bishop of Lichfield he'd been a special envoy for the Archbishop of Canterbury in South Africa during the apartheid period in the 1980s. 

The diocese says the former bishop, who had been living with dementia for several years, died today at a care home in Surrey.

The diocese covers large parts of Staffordshire, northern Shropshire and the Black Country.

London attack: Police appeal for information on Khalid Masood

A new picture has emerged of Westminster attacker Khalid Masood - who had been living in Birmingham for months - as police try to establish if he acted alone or was directed by others .

His fourth victim has been named as Leslie Rhodes, 75, from Clapham, south London - one of three people killed by Masood's car on Westminster Bridge.

A Romanian woman who fell from the bridge is stable in hospital.

Police said they had made two more "significant arrests", taking the total number to 11.

Ten people are still being questioned by police.

Inadequate children's social care services in Dudley improving, says Ofsted

Government inspectors say Dudley Council is making "positive progress" in children's social care, after being rated inadequate last year .

In a letter to the authority, the watchdog Ofsted says staff morale is good with reduced case loads allowing social workers more time to see children. 

But they also say there is "much more to do" to ensure all children receive effective services.

Neighbour said Westminster terrorist lived in Birmingham for months

After Westminster terrorist Khalid Masood's rampage on Wednesday, police searched a home in Winson Green, Birmingham.

Neighbours said Masood lived there for about seven months until December last year.

Iwona Romek was in disbelief when she realised her neighbour and the attacker were one and the same. 

She told the Press Association: "Now I'm scared that someone like that was living close to me." 

Ms Romek said she had seen him with a child aged between five and six and a partner, but that they had moved away about two to three months ago.
