Council 'to axe fifth of its waste collection jobs'

More than 120 waste collection jobs are being axed at Birmingham City Council, says the union Unite which estimates it amounts to a fifth of "the actual refuse collection squad".

The BBC has contacted the local authority for comment on the number quoted by the union - 122 - and the claim it is 20% of the provision.

It has so far said that it has consulted extensively on a "new waste services operating model", with "alternative employment within the council" offered for those affected. An additional £10m per year, it said, would need to be found if its proposed changes were not made to an operation it called inefficient and outdated.

Industrial action is now being considered by members of Unite which also says the jobs will go "in the next fortnight".

Murdered MP Jo Cox remembered by Birmingham colleagues

Monica Rimmer

Journalist, BBC Online

The Labour MP Jo Cox is being remembered across the country on the first anniversary of her murder.

Events are being held today and over the weekend as part of The Great Get Together.

Emma Reynolds, the Labour MP for Wolverhampton North East, says Jo achieved more in 12 months than others manage in a lifetime of politics.

Jo Cox
PA

She gathered together with Andrew Mitchell, you might say an unlikely partnership, but they got on very, very well, they put Syria on the map again, people had started to forget how much suffering there was in Syria and she called on the government repeatedly to do more. She brought so much energy and commitment to the role of being an MP."
