Jail for rapist who attacked women while wearing gorilla mask

A man has today been sentenced to 21 years in prison for a series of attacks on women while wearing what victims described as a gorilla mask or one looking like Yoda from Star Wars.

West Midlands Police said Elvis Sidaway, 53, of Fountain Road, Edgbaston, "preyed on lone young women" as they made their way home in Birmingham.

He was charged with five counts of sexual assault by touching, for which he pleaded guilty at an earlier hearing. He pleaded not guilty to rape and three counts of possession of a knife for which he stood trial earlier this week, being found guilty on all charges.

He preyed on women in Selly Oak, Edgbaston and Quinton.

Birmingham man jailed for breaking terrorism order

A 40-year-old man from Birmingham has been sentenced to 15 months in prison for breaching the conditions of a terrorism order.

Police say Abdul Raheem of Coleshill Road, Birmingham, was released from prison on a 10-year order after pleading guilty to terrorism offences in 2009.

According to the West Midlands Force he was arrested in 2016 for not telling police he had been using a different name.

Under the terms of the order, he was required to notify police of any changes to personal details.

Marshall returns home from Wolves tour

Wolves winger Ben Marshall has returned home from the club's pre-season tour of Austria for treatment on an injured hip.

No likely length of absence has been suggested by the club, which for now says only that it is "hopeful he will return to action as quickly as possible" after consulting a specialist.

This follows the injury suffered by Marshall's fellow winger Helder Costa, who will miss the start of the new season following ankle surgery.

The Library of Birmingham has been included in a set of new stamps to celebrate 10 iconic buildings in the UK.

Other buildings to feature include the Eden Project in Cornwall, Liverpool's Everyman theatre and the Scottish Patliament building in Edinburgh.

Children taught about knife crime

Children at a school in Birmingham are being taught about the dangers of knife crime.

The Assistant Police and Crime Commisioner in the West Midlands Ashley Bertie will be at Holte School in Lozells.

His visit follows an increase in violent crime and he says children will be told stories about people who've lost family members to stabbings.

Husband and wife sentenced for taking money from business

A husband and wife have been sentenced after pleading guilty to fraud and money laundering charges.

Aimee Purchase, 36, from Much Wenlock, admitted fraud by abuse of a position of trust and was jailed for two years and eight months, while 38-year-old Rikki James Purchase pleaded guilty to money laundering and was given a two-year suspended sentence.

West Mercia Police said more than £100,000 had been laundered in all.

Officers said Mrs Purchase was employed as a finance director for a Stourbridge company and they found she had transferred money to accounts held by the couple, to fund their lifestyle and support Mr Purchase's own business.

The force said both defendants would now also face proceedings to recover the assets they stole.

The 31 year old has signed a two-year deal to become Blues manager Harry Redknapp's fourth summer signing.

N'Doye was a free agent, having turned down the offer of a new contract with French Ligue 1 side Angers.

It follows Redknapp's moves for Brighton keeper David Stockdale, Barnsley defender Marc Roberts and fellow midfielder Craig Gardner, whose loan from West Brom was made permanent.

Murder-accused pair appear in court

A teenager and a 20-year-old man have appeared in court charged with murdering James Brindley, 26, who was fatally stabbed while walking home in Aldridge last month.

In a brief hearing at Birmingham Magistrates' Court, Aaron Kahrod, of Walsall Road, Alrdidge, and a 17 year old appeared in the dock flanked by security officers.

Wearing suits and white shirts, both spoke only to confirm their names, dates of birth and addresses.

They were remanded in custody to appear at Birmingham Crown Court on Monday.

New swimming pool part of Commonwealth Games bid

Three new venues have been revealed for Birmingham's Commonwealth Games bid including a brand new 50-metre pool in Sandwell.

As part of the project, the planned Sandwell aquatics centre would be upgraded to include warm up and competition diving pools.

The Ricoh Arena in Coventry would be used for netball while Villa Park would host the rugby sevens tournament.
